Where Is the Effort?
There’s a simple truth most people avoid. Anything worth having takes effort. Not just interest or intention. Real effort.
You see it everywhere. In the gym, people go through the motions, distracted and half committed, then question why nothing changes. In studying, it shows up as poor focus and last minute work, followed by disappointment in the results.
It doesn’t work like that. Effort is what drives change. If very little goes in, very little comes out.
I saw this clearly when I worked as a personal trainer. The people who progressed were not always the most talented. They were the ones who showed up properly, stayed consistent and were willing to push themselves when it got uncomfortable. Their results reflected that.
It is no different in counselling. Some people come in expecting change to just happen because they have turned up. But counselling is not something that happens to you. It is something you take part in. It requires honesty, reflection and action outside of the session.
If you hold back, avoid difficult areas or expect the therapist to do the work for you, progress will be limited.
The men I work with often feel stuck, whether that shows up as anger, isolation or a lack of direction. The ones who move forward are not the ones with perfect situations. They are the ones willing to engage fully, take responsibility and try something different.
That might mean saying things you have never said before, looking at patterns you would rather ignore or making changes that feel uncomfortable at first. None of that is easy, but it is effective. Effort does not guarantee immediate results, but without it, change is unlikely.
This applies to your mental health, your fitness, your relationships and your work. You cannot consistently do the minimum and expect the maximum.
So it is worth asking yourself one question. Where is the effort in your life right now?
Not where you think it is, but where it shows up in your actions. That answer gives you a starting point. From there, things can begin to shift.
Real change is built, not given.
